Abortion Questions & Answers

First or Second Trimester? First or Second Trimester?

First Trimester Abortions are done in our office in a two to three hour visit. During this time our patients are first requested to provide us with important medical history.

Once all the information is collected, you are invited to participate in a group counseling session. Here we answer your questions, discuss the procedure, and encourage you to air your doubts and feelings.

Second Trimester Abortions performed during the second trimester of a pregnancy (13 to 24 weeks) are called dilation and evacuation (D&E).

Second Trimester Abortions are done in our office in two consecutive days. We request that you remain locally overnight, and that you have a friend of family member drive you to and from the office.

On the first day, cervical dilators will be inserted into the cervix to gently and comfortably dilate the cervix through the night.

On the second day of your Second Trimester Abortion, you will be given anesthesia, which will put you to sleep for up to 15 minutes. Once asleep, the pregnancy tissue will be removed.

Is Abortion Safe? Is Abortion Safe?

Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures available because it is legal. In the past 25 years, since Roe v. Wade, the risk of death from abortion has declined 85%.

Childbirth has a greater risk of death than abortion. The earlier your pregnancy, the less risk is involved in your pregnancy termination. Early abortion (before 12 weeks) significantly reduces the risk of hemorrhage. It also decreases or eliminates the risk of embolism.

Anesthesia Anesthesia

At Bronx Abortion, we offer you the opportunity to select the type of anesthesia that is right for you. You can choose to be awake or asleep for the procedure. Your anesthesia options are described in more detail below.

• Local Anesthesia involves the injection by the physician of pain-stopping medication into your cervix. You will be fully awake during the procedure, but your cervix will be numbed. You can expect to have moderate cramping during the procedure.

• Twilight Anesthesia is administered by injecting medication into your vein. This medication will allow you to sleep for the duration of the procedure. The medication is given by an Anesthesiologist, a physician specially trained in anesthesia or by a Nurse Anesthetist.
